Signs and drain forests.

This old shop front should probably be one for Sébastien Ardouin's excellent blog, Painted signs and mosaics because it's more ceramics than faded sign.  I've no idea whether it was an old general stores or something more specialised.  It's nice to see that it's in pretty good condition.  Wastdale Road, just off the Stansted Road, Forest Hill.

After too long off the bike, I couldn't stay indoors when the weather's this good.   In addition to cycling around looking at walls, you also have to pay attention to the road every now and then.  Which is how I managed to avoid running over this drain forest in Vancouver Road, SE23
I find there's something very reassuring about the ways vegetation manages find the most unlikely niches.  Here's another one from last year in Greenwich, Lassell Street, SE10

What a discovery! I must have been a bit lazy when I wrote a post about the Pearks' doorstep mosaic on Portland Road (http://paintedsignsandmosaics.blogspot.com/2010/03/pearks.html) otherwise I would have realized Pearks' Stores had branches throughout most of the country, where they sold provisions and teas.
Thanks a lot for the mention!

Sébastien, feel free to use it if it fits into a post - there are no copyright restrictions.

Thanks! I may try to see if there are more remains of the Pearks 'empire' around for a possibe post. In any case I am sure my steps will take me again to that part of London one of these days.
